A.BSTRACT
During rhe period from Alay, 1992 to April. 1993. the species
composition and diversity c.’rde of the phytoplankron community in
Manzalah lagoon were investigated monthly at 11 sires. A toral of 1-11
species \I’ere idenriflcd comprising 64 diatoms. 42 green algae, 2-1
blue-green algae. 5 dinoflagellates and 6 Eliglenophyceae.

crop and in community stmcture was obsen’ed in lvlanzalah lagoon.
Diatoms lFcre rhe most imporrant algae durina the wimer and ::,pring.
Ch10rophyres were mainly obsefTed during alflilmn. while
cyanophyles ja\’Our slimmer. The phytoplankton sranding crop
auained an average of 12-1 x 106 uni/. r 1 with a remarkable increase
as compared with the previous records. The study indicated high level
of eutrophication. Phytoplankton diversity varied Widely in the areas.
neighbouring the olltfalls of discrlClrged water and within narrow
range far from rhe effect ofdrainage water
