ABSTRACT
Abu-Qir Bay lies to the east ofAlexandria City and is considered
as one ofthe most polluted areas along the Egyptian .’vfediterranean
Coast. The Bay is mostly affected by different sources of land
drainage, the industrial polluted water of EI-Tabia outfall. brackish
water of Lake Edku discharged through EI-}v’faadiya outlet and fresh
water from Rosetta branch of the River Nile. Since, the water
circulation in the Bay is largely affected by the wind regime. The aim
ofthe presenr work is to study the wind driven circulation in Abu-Qir
Bay and its effect on the pollutam transport using the numerical
modeling.
Blumberg and AIellor (1987) three-dimensional coastal ocean
model (POl’vl) was used ro simulate the wind driven circulation in the
Bay with a horizontal resolution ofabout O.j minute.
The simulation results show rhat the northerly and northwesterly
wind causing an accumulation of surface water inside the bay. The
easterly wind forced the surface water to the west causing the
accumulation of polluted water along the coasts of Abu-Qir town.
During the westerly wind, the accumulation occurs in the eastern part
