ABSTRACT
During September 1986 the hydrographic conditions ofan important areas
of the Arabian Gu(fi.e. the area near the Strait ofHormuz, were discussed.
The salinity picture, which is considered one of the reasons (~f the small
residence time ~f the Arabian Gulf was obtained.
Four d~ffere11t water masses were detected. A .’1m/ace one, from 0 to 100
meters reflecting the Arabian GulfsUI/ace water. The second one, its core at
about 200 m. depth which rejlects the deeper Arabian Gulfmixed waters. The
third water mass, at depth from 0 to 20 m. which is the surface water, mixed
with the Gu!f(?! Oman waters. Ihe fourth water mass was recorded at depth
20 to 300 m. which reflects the deep waters (?! the GulfofOman.
