The eastern harhour Is a shallow. protected.
semi-enclosed and circular basin. It receives an
IImount of IIbout 6.1.000 m3/day of unprocessed sewage
which affects the physical. chemical and biological
characterlstlcs of the harbour waters. The
hydrographic parameters namely; water temperllture.
salinity and dissolved oxygen were studIed In the
ha rbour dud ng the per Iod from October 1985 to
September 19S6.
During autumn season. the water tempf’rat.ure
‘\ Increases seaHII,-d. It. varies from 18.S to 23.5°C \
, at the surface and from IS.75 to 23.17°C near bottom.
Lowes t VII 1ues of wa ter tempera ture were observed
durtng the winter months. It. ranges between 17.2
and IS.9,·C at the surfllce and between 16.9S and
IS.~O·C near bottom. The hIghest values of water
temperature at both surface (30.30°C) and bottom
(28.50°C) were observed during the SUlllner months.
Salinity of the eastern harbour water Increases
seaward In October and December. where the maximum
values of salinity WI’ I I’ observed near I’I-llouyha7
(> 39.00 X). The effect. of the polluted dnmestlc
sewage Was clear on the surface Sllllnity during
spring and summer months.
Ourlng autumn. the dissolved oxygen content In
the harbour water vllrles between 3 and 5 n11/1. While
In November. the maximum values 9.43 – 9.65 mill
were observed at the surface. The decrease In the
oxyg!’o content was observed In May ••June and .Iuly
In both surface and bottom waters. while In ~ugust.
It was observed at bottom wllter only and during
September In both surface and bottom.
