ABSTRACT
Seven short cores wre SllIlpled frOll Lake Marfut
to fllustrate the vertfcal varfatfons occurred fn
the deposf ts after they have been burfed for a long
tfme. The core samples were subjected to some physfcal
and chemfcal fnvestfgatfons.
The densfty of ~ry -..d showed a wfde range of
varfBtfons fn all cores. The great decrease fn water
content wfth depth 15 due mainly to the change fn
the nature of the upper sedfment samples as a result
of the contfnuous supply of sewage and fndustrfal
wastes. The densfty of wt mud gave a clear fnverse
correlatfon with the water content. It increased
markedly wfth depth.
Irregular hfgher and lower. values of organfc
matter. calcareous substances. allochthonous materfals
and dfatom-sflfca were found at dffferent depths
of all cores. givfng a wtde range of varfatfons
The quantftatfve d15irfbutfon of these cOlllpOnents
fn the core sedfments was found to depend IIIIfnly
upon certafn factors wfch were dfscussed.
