ABSTRACT
Sepia o(ficinalis and Loligo vulgaris specimens were collected mOllthly
from the commercial trawl catches and the fish markets of (Al?follshy)
Alexandria, Abu Qir, A1aadiya and Ros~tta during the periodfrom September
1989 to August 1990. Ihe stomach contellt (l6./6 alld ./66 .specimensfor s..
o(ficillalis and L. vulgaris. re,spectively were examilled. Among the examined
samples; about 68% (./39 .specimen) and 50% (23./ .specimen), were
containingfood re.spective to the mentioned species. 171e principle diet item for
s.. otficinalis ).j!as Cl’lfstacea followed by fish; while for L. vulgaris, the
principlefood item was,fishesfollowed by crustacea, Remains (l cephalopods
also appeared in the stomach content of both species, which suggests that
cannibalism may playa role in the ecology (lthe two .species.
