Aquaculture Division

Fishery resources are considered to be the most important sector in the national economy of the Arab Republic of Egypt with a total annual production of 1.4 million tons. Over the past 20 years, Egypt was able to achieve a great success in the field of aquaculture, which has become a necessity to bridge the food gap and keep pace with the ongoing increase in the number of the population. Egypt represents the first state in the Mediterranean basin in aquaculture production and the eighth country in terms of the total world production. Fish is a traditional and important component of the Egyptian diet, and is the main source of cheap animal protein for a growing population. Nowadays, the total Egyptian aquaculture production represents about 65% of the total fish production (1.4 million tons) which maintain 16.5 kg /per capita/ year (population 90 million). Egyptian demand for fish in 2030 is forecast to reach 2 500 000 tones. This fact means that we need to accomplish additional 1 million tones to meet the increasing demand per capita/ year needs (population 105 million people in 2030).
