ABSTRACT
Bl1ateral eyestalk removal in Peu~s terathurus
(Leach) results in a precocious onest of proecdysh
and’ moulting. A similar but IIIOre pronounced effect
fs observed when unl1ateral .ablat1on 1s perfonned.
The effect of eyestalk relllOval was studied during
the moulting cycle of the experimental an1…1. The
degree of moult acceleration was Jependent upon
the time of eyestalk removal relat1Ye to the age
of the prawn and also upon the time of year. Possible
mechanfsms.·of moult control in the Penaeus uratllurus
were dfscussed.
Both unilateral and bilateral eyestalk remoyal
caused a marked increase in glycogen content of
adult female prawn represented by deposition tn
the muscle and hepatopancreas of destalked antmals.
